| One of the keys to maintaining a beautiful lawn is in the mowing. Mower height, blade sharpness and mowing schedule can make the difference between a lush green lawn and one that is brown with weed and pest infestations.
- Schedule: Most lawns require weekly mowing during the growing season. Letting your lawn get too tall between mowings can cause damage. In general, it is not recommended to mow off more than 1/3 of the blade height. Lawns in our area that are healthy will begin to slow down in Late September. In some instances, with a warm fall, you may be able to mow your lawn every two weeks until November.
- Blades: Mower blades must be maintained daily to keep your lawn looking its best. Dull blades do not cut the grass blade tips evenly which results in damaged blades that will give the lawn a brown cast. Sharp mower blades will leave the grass blade with a straight tip and minimal damage or browning.
- Mowing Height: The mowing height is a very important factor in overall turf performance. Tall fescue lawns should not be mowed any lower than 2 inches and 3 to 3.5-inches tall is even better. Tall fescue is a cool season grass unlike the well known warm season grasses like Bermuda or St. Augustine. It recovers better and can survive the hot summer temperatures when it is not mowed as often or lower than 3 inches. Tall fescue can even fight off weed invasion when it is mowed at a proper height by being able to establish a dense healthy plant.
