Leaf mold is basically a type of compost that is only made up of fallen tree and shrub leaves. It is dark brown to black, has an earthy aroma and a crumbly texture much like regular compost. Leaf mold differs from standard compost in the fact that there are no greens (nitrogen) added to the leaf mold pile, In most cases leaf mold takes one to two years to fully decompose. If the leaves are ground before being added to the pile the process id accelerated.
Oxford Lawn & Landscape collects all of our leaves and keeps them separate from our other recycling process. We grind the leaves separately and then allow them to decompose for at least a full year before their use.
